Choose The Right Bass Fishing Tackle For Your First Fishing Adventure

If your going on your first Bass fishing trip and you haven't done any fishing ever before it can be a bit daunting to try and find the right fishing tackle. The moment you step in to a shop that sells fishing tackle, or better yet a shop that specializes in fishing, you will see that there are thousands of items to choose from. Things like lures, reels and rods are there in so many forms and variations and they exist because each one is needed in its own situation. For a beginner this can be shocking and even a reason not to go fishing but you should not let this huge assortment of fishing items to choose from get you down. As a beginner you don't have to know what all the different items are for just try and get the basics.

A Rod

We begin with the most difficult item in your bass fishing tackle, the decision which rod you need to buy. You already know that there are a lot of rods you can choose from. One can get a special rod for every type of fish you can catch or for the special lures that are available. The choice of rod largely depends on the type of lure you will be using.

Looking at them you would not say so, but a fishing rod is a complex piece of tackle. When we talk about bass fishing rods there are four points to look for and these are tip action, length, power and sensitivity.

Tip Action

This tells you if the tip is soft or maybe more stiff. When the tip of your rod is soft then you will be able to make a more accurate cast, but on the other hand it will make the choice of lures a lot smaller.

Length

The type of fishing you are going to do and the type of lures you will be using will dictate the length of the rod.

Power

When we talk about power what this means is the weight of the rod, is it heavy or light. When you are going for bigger fish then you will need a heavier rod.

Sensitivity

This specifies how much the rod will let you feel. The more sensitive the fishing rod is the more you will be able to feel what the bait or lure is doing under water and of course when the fish are starting to take little bites.

So what does this mean for the choice you have to make. When you are going to fish with worms the best rod of choice would be the one which is sensitive because you want to feel what is going on at the bottom of the water. But the rod also needs to be fairly heavy and have a soft tip so you can do some accurate casting.

On the other hand when you will be using a spinner as bait then the rod needs to be a bit lightweight. This is because you will be casting a lot and a heavy rod would be costing your arms. When you get a short rod this will help in making those very accurate casts and with a medium to soft tip this will only get better.

These are only a simple and very basic examples of the type of rods and what the differences are, we haven't even touched the subject of reels, lines, lures etc. etc. We don't want to scare you away from fishing. Talk to someone that has done some fishing and who can tell you what type of rod you will need to take with you. Make sure you take the right bass fishing tackle with you. You could even talk to the people in the tackle shop, they can give you some good advice.

Once you start fishing you will see what the differences are and will no longer be in shock the moment you step in to a store to buy new tackle.

Fishing Tackle Review: Abu Garcia Revo Bass Fishing Lure Rod

Although I do enjoy fishing for many species, stalking the elusive bass is my favourite angling pastime. There's something quite satisfying about landing one of these wily fish. Not to mention eating it as well!. Someday, I'll share some of my tasty recipes with you. For now, though, I'd like to offer a brief review of one of the best pieces of fishing tackle you can use to catch bass destined for your recipes, the Abu Garcia Revo bass fishing lure rod.

About the Abu Garcia Revo Bass Fishing Lure Rod

I've chosen the mid-sized 8' rod length, because I mainly fish from shore using both deep diving plugs and surface poppers. The rod also does well, however, on those occasions when I do fish from a boat. Whether it's bass, pollock or coalfish, the Revo is extremely versatile.

Features of the Abu Garcia Revo Bass Fishing Lure Rod

I've always considered the guides to be a critical component of a quality fishing rod. The Abu Garcia Revo uses guides from one of the top manufacturers in the business, Fuji. Fuji guides are simply the best guides currently available. Backed by years of research and development, Fuji guides are strong and reliable. Today, Fuji remains at the forefront of tackle development and leading edge design, so the Fuji guides on this Abu Garcia rod helped convince me to buy it. Needless to say, I wasn't disappointed! Although I'm more into the substance of a rod than its style, I do have to say that the stunning, deep midnight blue colour of this Abu Garcia rod gives it a seriously elegant look. A distinctive fish graphic elevates this stylish rod even more. You'll be proud to use the Revo in any bass fishing venue. Don't be surprised if other anglers give you envious stares -- this Abu Garcia Revo rod looks very unique and striking.

Down to Details

OK, you say, this is a good looking rod. But what else do I need to know about the Abu Revo? Well, there's a keeper ring on the rod, a small but significant detail. A keeper ring, by the way, is a place to hook your hook safely when you're moving to another location. Those of us who've impaled our fingers on a loose hook greatly appreciate the addition of a keeper on our rods. This is a 2-piece rod that assembles quickly, so you can get down to fishing. It comes in a protective, semi-hard neoprene case, which will help prevent damaging the rod if it knocks around in a boat or in the boot of your car. Neoprene is a durable synthetic rubber that's resistant to water, oils, solvents, ageing and remains flexible across a wide range of temperatures. It's a great material for a rod bag. Another small but important feature I appreciate about this essential piece of fishing tackle is the unique, V-shaped hook sharpener located on the butt.

Hope you enjoyed this instalment of fishing tackle review, watch this space for more quality fishing tackle reviews.

Bass Fishing In The Winter In The North

The next few days in Ohio are supposed to be in the 50's, so, guess what I plan on doing if the lakes thaw out? Yep, go fishing for bass.

As you know the bass are not going to spend a lot of energy going after your bait, so offer them something a little larger than usual. A 10" worm comes to mind, a pig and jig or something to that effect.

Where you might have this in the water for 30 seconds in the summer, now it might take 4 or 5 minutes. Work it slow.......very slow.

Does this work? Well, one day it was so cold outside I never even got out of the truck, my fishing partner wanted to fish this new lake even though the wind was blowing about 20 miles an hour.

Can you imagine my surprise when he came back about 10 minutes later with a bass over 5 pounds? He was working a grape colored worm very, very slow.

I have fished in the winter ever since that day.

Charles E. White has fished for almost 50 years for bass from California to Florida. In his lifetime, it is estimated that he has caught over 6,000 bass. His biggest bass is a 12 pound 14 ounce that hangs on his wall in his office.

Charles has fished with people who have never fished for bass before and taught them how to become successful anglers and also has fished with the Pros in Florida.

His new website about fishing for bass is at http://www.bassfishingweekly.com.

Bass Fishing Lures and Tackle

You may have always wondered why there are hundreds of varieties of different tackle and lures used to catch the several species of bass. The answer to this questions would be... there is a time and place for each and every variety of lures. In dark water you must use this type, in clear water the other type. For shallow water use this lure, while in deep water you must use another with a couple add-ons. As you can see there may be hundreds of different scenarios to conquer and be able to make the bass attracted to your bait, that's why there are so many different varieties.

In this article I will explain to you the uses of each type of Bass lures and tackle as well.

Bass Lures and Tackle Types

Plastic baits- The plastic worm, lizard, crawfish, or anything else that is made out of a plastic substance is a great year round bait that is also fairly cheap. Through studies the plastic worm has won more tournaments than any other type of bait used. There are many different types of way to rig these plastics but they all seem to work very well as long as you follow the color rule at the bottom of the page.
Spinner baits- Are used to cover large area of water in a fairly short amount of time. There spinning actions causes much energy to be noticed by the bass either noticing the action or the shining propeller.
Top Water- Most exciting way to catch bass for sure. Specially efficient bait when the water is a little rough and windy. You may purchase something similar to the original Texas Popping bait which also attract the fish through sound as well. Great bait to use for shallow water.
Crank baits- Are more than likely the most versatile and useful bait for catching bass. They are very good to use no matter what kind of condition you have for underwater. They can pass through grass and algae without ever catching the leaves and making it useless. You can use crank baits year around and get the same results. Make sure you use smaller crank baits for spring fishing and as the water warms up use larger crank baits.
Jigs- Jigs are usually meant for early spring bass fishing. Naturally they are called jigs because you are supposed to pop it up and down while you are in the process of retrieving the jig. By jumping it, this creates a motion that makes the bass think it's alive and if they are hungry, you will surely get a bite.

Most useful tip for any kind of lure for bass fishing!

Clear water- Neutral, translucent, and white skirts and baits
Dirty vague water- white, blue, or even pumpkin orange color
Muddy Water- Orange, black, or chartreuse

A lot of the times the color of your bait may serve largely as the biggest factor in your ability to catch the lunkers!

And of course I have to include the most economical choice of bait to fish with.

To save money your best bet for catching bass is using the plastic worms. You can get a bag of 10 for about 2 or 3 dollars and for a total price of 10 dollars you can include some color variety and "bug variety".

Bass Fishing Gear - Don't Get Caught Short When You Land That Fish

Fishing tackle is also known as fishing gear, it is a common term that refers to the paraphernalia utilized by anglers while fishing. Approximately any equipment or gear used for catching fish can be called fishing tackle. Some examples are lures, bait, lines, rods, reels, nets and trawls, downriggers, outriggers, gaffs, harpoons, clevises, floats and traps. A device that is connected to the end of a fishing line, such as hooks, leaders, swivels, sinkers and snaps, is known as terminal tackle.

Bass fishing has average tackle of about 9ft to 10ft fishing rod which would perfectly match a salt resistant Arbor reel if fishing for sea bass. This provides a good balance and strength to the fishing rod. When you go out fishing for bass, you require a lot of line in your reel as a Bass may possibly go off to a distance of about hundred meters from where you are situated after getting hooked.

There are plenty of obtainable alternatives when purchasing line for bass fishing trips. One thing that you should remember is that, you must make sure the line for its knot-making capacity before acquiring any of it. Simultaneously, you must also make certain that the line is flexible enough to react to the fish's slightest tugs or bite. A good purchase would be a braided fishing line, which guarantees your line will not crack in the middle of a good fight. Braided lines are more durable than other types.

A bass fisherman should be aware about the importance of great bass fishing gear. The gear you use could have a big effect on how successful your bass fishing journey goes. A bass angler should know what type of gear to bring and how to use it. No fishing expedition is absolute without taking along the right equipment to catch fish. You might need additional gear depending on the category of fishing you are doing and when and where you are fishing. Each fisherman improves his own technique over time and this will settle on the amount and types of bass fishing equipment that you obtain in addition. Considering the significance of dressing properly when going out fishing is very important. The clothing you wear is truly essential as the rest of your bass fishing gear is. Many devoted bass fishermen have fishing vests and fishing hats which they can attach lures to, as well as gear to help battle the elements and as well as being practical utilizing pockets other pieces of equipment.

Of all the kinds of bass fishing gear available, the most essential items for success would be the choice of baits and lures the angler uses. As for baits and lures for bass, there are literally thousands to choose from. All of these normally fall into one of six vital categories which includes, crank baits; spinner baits; top waters; jigs; plastics; live bait. From these, you can select which will function properly in accordance to your requirements at the time, the kind of fish you are fishing for, the setting of the waters and your personal preference.

The majority of bass fishermen obtain a mixture of various types of lures and baits in any fishing activity so they always have what they need at hand. When a bait or lure is not working after you try using it in different ways then you may use the other types which are available. The kind of bait or lure that you may utilize depends on various conditions; for instance the weather, the types of waters you are fishing in, the extent and variety of the bass, the vicinity of the water and more.

Are You Taking Bass Fishing Too Seriously?

With all the tension and stress in life the last thing you need is more stress when bass fishing.

If you're fishing tournaments, going after that big hawg or just bass fishing with friends and

have competition between the few of you that fish together, then maybe it's time for a break.

What kind of break you ask? A break from bass fishing stress! A laughter break! Yes, they

say laughter is the best medicine and if you're uptight every day you just might find out a truer

statement has never been spoken.

If you're bass fishing is no longer relaxing and no fun anymore then back away for a little while

and get a cup of coffee and start reading. What are you going to read, why fishing stories, bass

fishing jokes and how about a free bass fishing e-book that is hilarious?

Here is just an outtake of the e-book I'm talking about:

Have you ever tried to catch those little minnows that dart all over the place? It's

not easy is it? I mean even with a casting net in a whole herd of them you still

don't get very many for the effort. Well, you're in luck I have made a plan that

makes it a lot easier.

Here is what you do....First, take your wife along for moral support. That is a

main step in this technique. Second, go to your local bait store and get a 10 foot

casting net.

Ok, now for the technique itself. Go out in your boat and find some minnows on

top swimming. You will know there are millions of them below the surface. Then

take your boat and start to go around in circles, this will gather them into a

smaller size gathering. Keep going around in circles for maybe a half hour letting

the group get into a smaller circle each revolution.

Now, once they are in a circle, give your wife the cast net. You take a quarter

stick of dynamite and light it but be sure to have your wife with the catch net and

ready beforehand. The next step in crucial in timing. The second the dynamite

is lit and thrown in the water have your wife spread out the cast net and jump in

the water with it and gather all the minnows she can immediately. This is very

important because if the minnows are shocked too much and go all the way to

the bottom, then you wife might not be able to hold her breath that long to go all

the way to the bottom where the minnows are located.

Believe me, I am talking from experience just last week we had to call the

emergency squad for her because she came floating back to the top and can you

believe it, she didn't have one damn minnow in that cast net when she finally

surfaced. I guess the EMT's couldn't believe it either because I heard them say

"you're not going back and do that again, I guess?" I have to agree with them, I

mean they couldn't believe it either she came back up without one minnow in that

net.

You do have to show some sympathy for her though so this is what I do. She

comes up usually crying and holding her ears. So, I put my hands over my ears

too and throw water on my face so when she surfaces she thinks I am in pain

and crying too. Then she will start yelling and I will just point to my ears and say

"I can't hear you sweetheart". Make sure you have some kind of painful look on

your face as I assure you she will when she comes up. I got her some ear...........

If you want to read more of the story, you can get the e-book free. Just look in my

resource box below.

Bass Fishing Technique

Fishing for Guadalupe bass in Texas is another best bass fishing technique for local anglers to try. Look for the Guadalupe bass in every single state of this glorious nation besides Texas and the cooler will remain empty, for a long time. This is not because the fisherman cannot entice the beautiful bass to bite, the reason is that this relative of the smallmouth bass is found only in the great state of Texas. They say that everything grows big in Texas and that is usually the case when it is in reference to Longhorns and Dallas Cowboys, not the diminutive Guadalupe. This Texas Trout as they are affectionately referred to in Texas, barely grow over 14 inches and weigh in at a light three pounds for a whopper.

The anglers who hunt for these feisty and high-flying fish normally do so in one sector of Texas. Austin, the state capital of Texas, is where they find the acrobatic Guadalupe Bass. The fish prefer the gentle rolling streams of the areas hill country and cannot be found anywhere else. This makes the fish the state representative for all the great game fish that are found in Texas. Quite an honor that is bestowed on a fish that got its start as a hybrid of sorts when the Department of Natural Resources in Texas attempted to cross a smallmouth with other species of non-native fish. The results were not so good and one of the resulting creations was the magnificent Guadalupe Bass. Usually a cross hybridization that goes awry is a bad thing, with the offspring either eating the natives or eating the food the natives depend on. This is not the case. This story has a happy ending and luckily for the residents who fish for these wonders of the state, the fish decided to stay close to home. Ever been to the central Texas hill country? Cannot say we blame them for staying put. The landscape is beautiful and clean.

In order to rustle up some of the Texas Trout there is a method that many Texas anglers employ: Fly-fishing. There is no greater thrill than hooking into a Guadalupe on a very light-weight fly rod. The jumping ability of the bass leaves many to believe that a little trout snuck into the petri dish at The University of Texas? Either way this fish is a much sought after species in Texas with anglers traveling as far as California to try their fly-fishing expertise against this stream loving bass. The bait of choice for many anglers is the hand-tied fly. The fisherman of central Texas use the same fly's that are tied to catch the browns and rainbows of the same area. It must be likened to getting two birds with one stone. The Guadalupe is a hardy character resulting in a strong abundant population there in Texas. The state appreciates their master creation and so do many anglers who hunt for the bass. So the next time the "hankering" to catch a rarity comes a calling, head for Leander, Texas and settle in for a spell.

You Can Learn From Pro Bass Fishing Experts About Bass

Beginning fishermen can learn a lot by talking to a pro bass fishing expert. They are a good source of information about the sport of bass fishing, as it has the mistaken reputation of being a hard sport to master. It is not. Skills can be learned on the shore of a river or a lake, and then taken out into a boat for some real adventurous fishing.

Fishing tackle is an indispensable part of its gear to any bass fishing professional and can determine the success or failure of the fishing trip. With plenty of experience in this outdoor activity under their belts, professional bass anglers know precisely what terminal tackle they'll need, either for freshwater or salt water bass fishing, before leaving shore. For example, if they're looking for smallmouth bass or largemouth bass, then they'll use the appropriate lures, and the right 'wet' or 'dry' flies.

Among other essential items are swivels, a small metal unit that can prevent twisting or snapping of the line caused by rotating flies, or a strong tug by a large bass. Leaders are used to prevent damage, or cutting the line on fish teeth or rocks. Flies are small insect-like artificial bait, of various colors and form that attract such fish.

They will also take the weather conditions into account. Before leaving on the boat, professional bass enthusiasts make it a point to study weather conditions, via forecasts and bulletins, as well as the timings of high and low tides, etc. Only if such conditions are favorable, will they venture out.

If you look online, on television and in magazines, then you will find a ton of information about how to improve your skills as a bass fisherman. Many pro bass fishing experts put out TV specials, websites and media interviews with tricks and tips for catching such a fish.

They will also tell you what kind of fishing tackle works best for them, including what kind of rods, reels, lures and flies they use. Another thing they will teach you is how to tell if the weather is right for bass fishing.

If you are interested in becoming a pro bass fishing guru, then you will need to start the process of purchasing all of the fishing tackle you will need. Don't run right out and buy a boat though; wait until you are sure you want to get serious about it and just rent one for the time being.

How about joining a club for this type of outdoor activity? Many clubs provide great learning opportunities. Just make sure that you have the determination, patience and optimism that are needed to become successful at this sport.
